Shades
High in the Monashee Mountains of British Columbia, I was blessed to witness this breathtaking scene unfold before me. The air was filled with a soft atmospheric haze, creating a mesmerizing layering effect as each mountain ridge faded gently into the next. This natural gradient of tones formed an endless cascade of peaks and valleys, adding both depth and mystery to the composition.
As the haze diffused the light, the mountains revealed their character in subtle shifts of shade a perfect subject for black and white photography. Stripped of colour, the scene transforms into pure form and feeling. The overlapping ridgelines appear almost like brushstrokes, each one softer than the last, stretching into the horizon and giving a sense of both timelessness and stillness.
The reflective shimmer of the lake winding through the valley adds contrast, a luminous pathway that cuts through the darker silhouettes of the land. It anchors the image, reminding us that even in the quietest of landscapes, water carries the story of life.
When I pressed the shutter, I knew this would be a black-and-white image one that could cover off an entire spectrum of tonal beauty. Within it lies at least 22 shades of grey, each one telling its own part of the story. For me, this photograph is not just about mountains or haze; it’s about perspective, mood, and the way light itself sculpts the land.
This fine art print invites the viewer to pause, reflect, and lose themselves in the layered silence of the Monashees a timeless reminder of nature’s quiet majesty.
